In 2010, Biltmore Winery—located at the historic Biltmore Estate in Asheville, North Carolina—posted an open contest for designers and illustrators to come up with a new label for their special release Christmas wine. I jumped at the challenge.
I wanted to design a label that was simple, memorable and distinctive. Something that not only separated it from regular Biltmore wines but also all the other wines on the shelf during the busy holiday season. Bilmore has quite a traditional aesthetic which gives a nod to the era of the historic home. My approach was to use colorful flat and simple shapes to contrast the ornate features found on their regular wine bottles. I chose to design a large snowflake, made from the shape of their wine glasses and bottles, floating down over the estate to represent the first snowfall of the season. The colorful stripes on the ground represent the grand walkway in front of America’s largest home.
I end up placing third in the contest and receiving over 850 votes in the two week-long voting process. Needless to say, this label was not produced but I was happy with the results and direction I took.
